i was thinking on my way out of dreamland this morning. yes, i know, but some of my best thoughts happen during that journey.
what do we, in this day, age, and culture, really do? we don't write letters anymore. we type them. we don't watch our own children, that's what daycare is for. we don't cook our own food, it comes in pretty boxes. seriously! i brought broccoli and cheese to thanksgiving one year. i made it there fresh, since it's so quick. my brother asked what brand it was. i said it's broccoli and cheese, jon.
"yeah, but what brand?"
"no brand. i made it myself!"
"you can do that? how?"
"it's broccoli and cheese!"
"wow, cool!"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?! yeah, btw, jon, you can make macaroni and cheese by combining macaroni and cheese!!
we all have cell phones, right? but do we call each other, or text? we get updates on our friends' lives on facebook and twitter. now, i have friends who live in australia, so the time difference alone makes communication difficult. but i have another friend who lives the next town over, but fb told me she's in a relationship. i'm so ashamed to admit that, but it's true.
we barely check our mail. the one on a pole with a flag. you know, stamps? envelopes? saliva? when we do get it, we don't really look at it until it's piled up so high we can't see our toaster. that's another point. did you know there are instructions on how to microwave your pop tarts®? like 2 seconds on high. "jeez, i would've been on time, boss, but i had to nuke my toaster pastry. good thing i read the instructions, or i wouldn't have realized i had to remove the pastry from the pouch first!"
we pay bills, date, shop, have sex, talk, share vacation pictures and videos, look words up in the dictionary, research in encylopedias, find out who we're supposed to vote for, find out who died, plan parties, plan trips, find movie times, find stock quotes, find out how much we're overdrawn, if it's a snow day, dump people, marry, check the weather (because the window is so far away), check traffic, work, get medical advice, masterbate, and type endless blogs ONLINE. why? are we afraid of face-to-face human contact? are we just too lazy?
i heard a 15-year old say that breast feeding was too old fashioned for people to do today. that's what formula is for. uh-huh. ask any pediatrician. breast milk is best.
people don't think for themselves. watch o'brien or letterman one night, and note their political views. then, the next day ask people what they think of that event. more often than not, they'll repeat what they heard on the talk show. they don't even realize it.
people assume because someone's a phd or md, that they're an expert. i heard a psychologist that you should never tell a teenager they did something wrong because "you'll ruin their self-esteem for the rest of their lives." WHAT!?!? okay, she's the "expert"! don't tell your kids they shouldn't have drank and driven. don't tell them they should use condoms or wait, because if they've already given up their virginity and did it once without a condom, they'll think they did something wrong and be depressed the rest of their lives.
we simply don't do much for ourselves. thank God there's no e-toilet paper or we wouldn't even do that ourselves. remember driving past the movie theater to see what they had showing, and then picking a movie based solely on the time it started? how many movies did you see back then that you might not have otherwise? it just doesn't happen anymore, and i think we're losing spontaneity because of it.
just my (not so) humble opinion.
